Garden City firefighters have all achieved the elite standards required by state and national certification, as well as certification by the National Professional Qualifications System. With over 350 calls for assistance each year, maintaining high standards of efficiency has resulted in an average response time of less than five minutes. Types of responses include fires, search and rescue, vehicle extrication, hazardous materials mitigation, wild land fire control, and maritime firefighting and rescue operations.
In fact, The Garden City Fire Department scored close to perfect in the following categories during the 2009 Insurance Service Organization (ISO) evaluation: receiving and handling of fire alarms; operators on duty and awake at the center to handle fire calls and other emergencies; engine companies and their water pump capacity; reserve pumps; ladder service; condition of hydrants; and increased training. ISO awarded the community a Class 3 and will result in an average 10% reduction in Homeowner’s Insurance rates.
Prior to 2007, the Garden City Fire Department was a community volunteer service only. Today Garden City employs four full time paid firefighters and thirty five volunteers at two locations: 160 Main Street and 2406 Highway 80. The future home of a third station is on the corner of Pineland Drive and Fall Avenue and is currently under construction.
Through emergency response, education and prevention, the Fire Department’s primary goals are to protect the lives and property of all citizens.
